November 19, 2011 Taste History Culinary Tour was Organically Green

Organic food and going-green were prominent themes for the Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History's November 19, 2011 Taste History Culinary Tour of Historic Delray Beach and Boynton Beach, Florida.  This was the second tour of this 3rd Saturday-of-the-month culinary history program.

The 4-hours tour which infuses history and food culture facts started with a visit to the Soul Food restaurant Donnie's Place located in the historic black business district known as Historic NW 5th Avenue in Delray Beach, Florida.  Following the sumptous tastings at Donnie's the tour took a turn for organic and green with visits to Michelle's Juice Booth and Victoria's Vegan Booth at the Delray Beach Green Market.  The culinary tour trail continued with a stop at Delray's Marianne's Gourmet Shop. The finale was a fun visit to the Urban Farm in the heart of Downtown Boytnon Beach, Florida which is operated by the Ocean Avenue Green Market/Secret Garden Cafe in Boynton Beach.

Check out the photos below.

Due to popular demand, more tour dates have been added for the Taste History Culinary Tour which is now available on both the 3rd and 4th Saturday of each month. 4th Saturday dates are effective in January. Take a look at the following photos from the November 19th tour:

Donnie's Place. Soul Food tastings of (L-R) Pigeon Peas & Rice, Mac & Cheese, Souse and Cornbread. The Taste History Culinary tours highlights food history and foodways. The Pigeon Pea is a legume recorded as far back as 3,500 years in India and from India made its way to East Africa and West Africa. From the Continent of Africa, Europeans brought the legume to American colonies during the Transatlantic Slave Trade where a new cuisine evolved with foods prepared by African slaves hence that food is strongly associated with Southern American meals and Soul Food.
Michelle's Juice Booth at the Delray Beach Green Market provided juice tastings of freshly squeezed oranges, carrots and apples.

Victoria's Vegan at the Delray Beach Green Market in Delray Beach, Florida. Vegan foods are prepared with non-dairy products.
Cheese glorious cheese at Marianne's Gourmet Shop in Delray Beach, Florida that was so tasty it was quickly devoured.  This is their own recipe - Pesto with Sundried Tomatoes Torte. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, cheese making originated soon after humans first took milk from wild and domesticated animals. The Bible refers to "cheese of the herd" being given to King David. Milk from cows was used for cheese making by about 1000 bc.
