Sun-Sentinel: Boynton culinary tour stirs the senses

November 26, 2012

Soak up food, culture and history on a culinary tour

BOYNTON BEACH - U.S. ArmyMaj. Nathan Boynton developed Boynton Beach as a retirement retreat when he moved here in 1894, at the age of 60.

He looked at what is now Ocean Avenue and said "I'll take this."
On Dec. 1, people from near and far can come learn local facts, eat local cuisine, explore art galleries and historic sites on Boynton Beach's culinary history tour, hosted by the Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History.

The Taste History Culinary Tours of historic Palm Beach County are usually focused on dual cities, such as Lake Worth/Lantana and Delray Beach/Boynton Beach, but in December it will make its second solo tour of Boynton Beach.

Palermo's Bakery in Boynton Beach, Florida a favorite on the Taste History Culinary Tour
"There is an emerging art scene in Boynton Beach and we're going to show that on Dec. 1," said Lori Durante, executive director at Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History.
The last Boynton Beach tour visited the Boynton Beach Women's Club, the Schoolhouse Children's Museum, the Boynton Beach Library, Artful Dreamers Studio and sites along Ocean Avenue, also known as the Avenue of the Arts.
But Durante makes no promises that this tour will be anything like the last.

"No two tours are the same. We like to maintain an element of surprise, it gives us flexibility and allows people to relax and let the experience unfold naturally," she said.
Arline Kiselewski, secretary of the Palm Beach Gardens Historical Society, attended the first Boynton Beach culinary history tour in November. Before the trip, she had heard rumors about Boynton Beach, but had never been there.

"It was a real eye opener," she said. "Up here we've been reading about all the bad stuff happening with the police and the city. It was nice to see the side that wasn't having all those problems."

Peruvian Ceviche, Argentinian Churrasco, Spanish Empanada and Cuban Mojito created a tasteful tour experience at Cabana El Rey

South American tapas tastings and the Cuban mojito rum drink at Cabana El Rey in Downtown Delray Beach were the featured culinary experience for the Taste History Culinary Tour held on Saturday, November 24, 2012.  The non-profit educational mission of these epicurean tours is to provide a food tastings experience with food history infused with the history of the local area.

Saturday, November 24th was also Small Business Saturday which is an initiative encouraging people to patronize local businesses which fit perfectly for Taste History because the tour travels to locally-owned restaurants and art galleries.
Cabana El Rey is the newest restaurant partner of the Taste History Culinary Tour of Historic Palm Beach County.  It was among five eateries visited in Delray Beach and Boynton Beach on the food tour along with trips to an urban farm and a community art gallery.
The tapas tastings at Cabana El Rey were the Peruvian Ceviche, the Argentinian Churrasco and Spanish Empanada prepared by Chef Roberto Aguilar whom the tour guests met and gave an arousing applause.  Cabana's master mixologist  provided a demonstration of the making of the Mojito which was a taste that gave the tour guests a nice spark.

According to history, mojito is from the African word mojo with its birthplace being in the sugar cane fields of Cuba. During the 19th century, African slaves who worked in Cuban sugar cane  fields dranked the sweet nectar derived from the sugar cane.  The other historical documentation about the mojito is that its origin goes back to Sir Franics Drake who was a sea captain who had invaded Havana, Cuba with his pirates in year 1586 looking for gold.  Sir Drake has also been credited with creating a medicinal drink that was a mix of sugar, lime, mint and rum that became known as the El Draque which evolved into the Mojito because of the Bacaradi Rum Company.  In 1862, the Bacardi Rum Company was founded in Santiago de Cuba by the Bacardi family who were wine merchants from Spain.  Upon settlement in Cuba, the Barcadi Company established a system of straining, filtering and aging rum to cultivate its taste. Nobel Prize winning author Ernest Hemingway spent time writing in Cuba and has been strongly associated with the popularity of the mojito.

Three cuisines tasted tapas-style at Caban El Rey - Peruvian Ceviche, Spanish Empanada and Argentinian Churrasco
The tapas of ceviche, empanada and churrasco were very pleasing to the Taste History Culinary Tour guests.  The tapas refers to small plates of food which is an eating style that developed in bars in Spain. The word tapa means 'lid' or to 'cover' because the small plates were placed on the top of mugs or glasses in the bars.  Around the 8th century, Arabs occupied Spain beginning in the area that became known as Andalusia and it was during this time that the tapas-style of eating was introduced  to that Spaniard region from Arabs. Tapas has since been adopted solely as a Spanish-way of eating.

Boynton Beach Culinary Tour conducted for Palm Beach Gardens Historical Society

Taste History had the honor of hosting the Palm Beach Gardens Historical Society on a culinary tour dedicated to the restaurants, cafes, markets, art and history of Boynton Beach, Florida.  This culinary program was conducted by the Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History which is a non-profit 501c3 organization.

The November 3, 2012 Taste History Culinary Tour consisted of tastings at Palermo's Bakery, the Secret Garden Cafe, Bun Bun Authentic Jamaican American Cafe and The Little House.  The combined bus riding and walking tour involved sightseeing of  the historic Westinghouse Lamp Posts in the Boynton Hills neighborhood for a presentation by Boynton's Historic Preservation Planner Warren Adams.

Taste History also traveled to the historic Boynton Woman's Club built in 1926, the 1913 Schoolhouse Children's Museum, the Boynton Beach Library, and a walking tour, by Boynton's Public Arts Administrator Debby Coles-Dobay, of kinetic art displayed along the Avenue of the Arts (Ocean Avenue) in Downtown Boynton Beach, Florida.  Also, Artful Dreamers Studio conducted a community art project for the visit by the Palm Beach Gardens Historical Society.  A special lecture and signing of the book Pioneering Palm Beach was presented by authors Ginger L. Pedersen and Janet DeVries

The Palm Beach Gardens Historical Society has become a fan of the Taste History Culinary Tours because back in June they took the culinary tour of Lake Worth & Lantana and enjoyed it so much they immediately scheduled a Taste History culinary tour of Boynton Beach.
