January 21, 2012 Taste History Culinary Tour. Check out the photos!

On January 21, 2012, the Taste History History Culinary Tours of Historic Delray Beach & Boynton Beach traveled to the historic St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Sundy House Restaurant & Inn, Hurricane Alley Raw Bar & Restaurant and Palermo's Bakery.

St. Paul's was the first stop of the tour where the guests visited the 1929 historic church sanctuary and learned the history of the communion bread and how it is made.  St. Paul's was originally established in 1904 however their original building was destroyed in the 1928 hurricane but a new sanctuary was re-built in 1929 which is still used to this very day.

Following St. Paul's, the tour made its way to the Sundy House for a tour of the gardens, appetizers and tea.  The Sundy House was built in 1902 and served as the private home of John Shaw Sundy who was the first Mayor of Delray Beach when Delray was incorporated in 1911.  The Sundy House is now a popular restaurant with a luxury boutique hotel.

After visiting the Sundy  House, the tour group  made its way through Downtown Delray Beach to the Green Market.  Following the Green Market in Delray Beach, the tour traveled to historic Downtown Boynton Beach to the Hurricane Alley Raw Bar & Restaurant. Hurricane Alley provided tastings of their homemade Lobster Bisque, Calamari, Sea Bass Salad and Pasta. The finale was dessert at the Sicilian family bakery Palermo's in Boynton Beach.

Freshly squeezed tea at the Sundy House.  The origin of Tea can be traced to China as far back at 551bc. Tea was imported to Europe during Portuguese exploration in the 16th century. By the 19th century Tea had gained mass popularity.

For more food tastings, Taste History visited Hurricane Alley Raw Bar & Restaurant located in Downtown Boynton Beach,FL. The eatery is located in the  historic 1919 Oyer building that was originally used by Oyer Insurance, Boynton's first insurance agency, which sold hurricane insurance. Four different cuisines were sampled at Hurricane Alley.

Pasticiotti at Palermo’s Bakery in Boynton Beach, FL were the tastings provided for the  January 21st Taste History Culinary Tour. Pasticiotti is an Italian pastry from the 1800s.


Not much history is known about the Pasticiotti pastry but it was inspired in the 1800s when the dessert was created for a Queen of Italy who loved chocolate thus this pastry was designed  with the chocolate in the center of the pastry as a palatable surprise for the Queen upon her first bite.

The Rainbow Cake was another tasting treat for the visit to Palermo's Bakery. The Rainbow cake is an Italian pastry designed to resemble the Italian Flag.  This cake was developed in Italian American communities in the early 1900s as an ode to their beloved Italy.


Palermo's is a popular visit for the Taste History Culinary Tours with many of the tour guests making purchases at this old-fashioned Sicilian family bakery in Boynton Beach, FL.
The purpose of the Taste History Culinary Tour is to provide a culturally enriching experience that infuses the local lifestyle history of early settlers, farming facts, tours of notable neighborhoods, as well as art and educational information about historic architecture that includes visits to restaurants in historic districts and/or buildings for food tastings. The culinary tastings includes specifics about food history, food culture and foodways.

The Taste History Culinary Tours of Historic Delray Beach & Boynton Beach are conducted by the Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History (MLFH) which is a non-profit 501c3 organization. These food tours are 4-hours and are a combination of bus riding and 4 to 6 blocks of walking tour with visits to at least two restaurants for cuisine tastings.  Tours are held year-round on the 3rd and 4th Saturdays of each month plus private groups tours area offered.   The culinary tours are expanding to include historic Lake Worth which will premiere on April 14th and thereafter culinary tours of historic Lake Worth will be conducted on the 2nd Saturday of each month.  The food tours of historic Delray Beach and Boynton Beach will continue on the 3rd and 4th Saturdays.
