USA Today 10 Best Review: Taste History Culinary Tours: Dive into Palm Beach's Food Scene

Weekend tours to West Palm Beach, Lake Worth and Delray beach allow guests to experience the food and history of Palm Beach County

By Kristopher Neild of USA Today 10 Best

Unbeknownst to the casual traveler, Palm Beach County is an area of much culture and history. Though publicity tends to focus on the mega-rich, the mansions of Palm Beach Island and the decked-out yachts, the fact of the matter is that the area is a melting pot of people from all of the world, from all walks of life.

Le Macaron French Pastries Shop in Downtown Delray Beach featured on the Taste History Culinary Tours

The local food scene reflects the above fact, with restaurants that craft menus focused on cuisine from Europe, the Caribbean, Latin America, India and the Far East. So on a normal vacation, it's hard to really get a true sample of everything the Palm Beach/West Palm Beach area has to offer, especially when sticking to whatever's in a five-mile radius of the hotel.

A culinary tour can help give travelers a more diverse look at the food offerings of this robust area, and that's where Taste History Culinary Tours comes in.

Taste History Culinary Tours is a nonprofit, narrated bus tour operated by the Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History. Tours go out on Saturdays, traveling to food-centric neighborhoods in West Palm Beach, Lake Worth, Delray Beach and more.

The tour's focus is food, but stops are also made at historical destinations and culturally relevant edifices.

During the bus portion of the tour, the narrator provides factual and relevant historical tidbits about the neighborhoods the group passes through. This helps provide great context for how the local food scene developed, along with how the cultures in Palm Beach melded to create architectural nuances and communities.

Guests are either on the bus or in restaurants/eateries for the majority of the time, with minimal walking required. (Think four to six blocks max.)

On a Taste History Culinary Tour, guests can expect to sample foods from at least three or four restaurants, where tastings can range from drinks to entree items to desserts.

Trips are never exactly the same, as Taste History Culinary Tours rotates the restaurants involved, and the chefs alter the tastings menus
.
As an example, a recent tour to Delray Beach/Boynton Beach made food stops at Sweet's (Jamaican); Cabana El Rey (Cuban); Le Macaron (French); and Palermo's Bakery (Italian), along with coffee shop and eatery Cafe Bleu.

On this Delray Beach/Boynton Beach tour, guests were able to experience ox tail and goat prepared with Caribbean flair, Cuban-style ribs and specialty cocktails prepared by the proprietor and authentic Italian desserts hand-made following traditional Sicilian recipes.

One of the best parts of the tour is that it takes you to places off the beaten path, places you might not even notice if not for registering for this experience.

So if you're looking for a non-traditional way to spend a day when on vacation in Palm Beach/West Palm Beach, look no further than the amazing narrated bus tours offered by Taste History Culinary Tours.

Tours typically sell out, as the organization likes to keep groups small so the experiences are intimate and enlightening. You should grab tickets through the organization's website well in advance.
