December 19, 2011 Taste History Culinary Tour. Soul Food, Brazilian Beef Stroganoff, Turkish Meatballs, German Cookies, Calamari & Visit to Boynton's Urban Garden!

The Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History welcomed Carli Smith of the Palm Beach County Convention & Visitors Bureau. She traveled along on the sold-out December 19, 2011 Taste History Culinary Tour of Historic Delray Beach & Boynton Beach, Florida. 
This December tour traveled to four eateries (Donnie's Southern Restaurant, Sefa Turkish Mediterranean Grill,  GOL! The Taste of Brazil and Hurricane Alley), plus a historic bed and breakfast in Delray Beach, the Urban Garden in Downtown Boynton Beach as well as Boynton's Ocean Avenue Arts Walk District.

Tour guests were transported via bus and by foot for narrated history with a live guide and food tastings in historic West Settlers, Frog Alley, the Pineaple Grove Arts District, Downtown Delray Beach, historic Ocean Avenue in Boynton Beach and Downtown Boynton Beach, FL.

Four Soul Food cuisines were served at Donnie's Southern Restaurant in Delray Beach, Florida during the Taste History Culinary Tour.  The term "Soul Food" was coined in the 1960s.

Made-from-scratch cornbread at Donnie's Southern Restaurant in Downtown Delray beach. Cornbread is made from cornmeal. Cornmeal is produced from the grinding of raw corn grains.  Many various uses of corn came from Native Americans who introduced corn to the European colonists and their African slaves who  settled in southern English Colonies.


The purpose of the Taste History Culinary Tour is to provide a culturally enriching experience that infuses the local lifestyle history of early settlers, farming facts, tours of neighborhoods, as well as art and educational information about historic architecture that includes visits to restaurants in historic districts and/or buildings for food tastings. The culinary tastings includes specifics about food history, food culture and foodways.

The Taste History Culinary Tours of Historic Delray Beach & Boynton Beach are conducted by the Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History (MLFH) which is a non-profit organization located inside the Boynton Beach Mall in Boynton Beach, Florida. These food tours are 4-hours and are a combination of bus riding and walking tour with visits to at least two restaurants for cuisine tastings.  Tours are held year-round on the 3rd and 4th Saturday of each month plus private groups tours area offered. Brazilian Beef Stroganoff at GOL in Delray Beach.  GOL is  a Brazilian restaurant located in the historic 1925 Arcade Building in downtown Delray Beach.  The beef used in their Stroganoff is prepared by a barbequeing technique. The origins of barbeque cooking and the word  (spelled barbecue or barbeque) have been linked to the Timucua Natives of Florida and the Arawak Indians and Taino Indians of the Caribbean.  Europeans, who had explored the Brazilian coastline after mapping parts of the Caribbean, introduced the word "Barbeque" into other parts of the world and into the English language.

Taste History Culinary Tours visited the 1923 Historic Hartman House which is a bed and breakfast in Delray Beach, Florida.

Carli Smith of PBCVB taste's the Lebkuchen, a German cookie, which is an old Hartman family recipe at the Historic Hartman House Bed & Breakfast.

Star Fruit Tree at the Historic Hartman House Bed & Breakfast. The scientific name for Star Fruit is Carambola.  It is a tropical fruit grown in warm climates like Florida.  Star Fuit earned its named because of its star-like shape.

Kim Alley Owner/Chef (left) of the Hurricane Alley on historic Ocean Avenue in Downtown Boynton Beach, Florida with Taste History Culinary Tour Director.  Hurricane Alley provided three culinary experiences for the tour that were seafood salad, calamari and lobster bisque. Carli Smith of PBCVB described Hurricane Alley as a "funky little raw bar and favorite local spot in east Boynton."

The Taste History Culinary Tour group walked to the Urban Garden located in Downtown Boynton Beach, Florida. "Farmer Sherry" described their seasonal farming process, and the vegetables and fruits grown. 

Banana Pepper grown at the Urban Garden in Downtown Boynton Beach, Florida.  The Banana Pepper is a member of the Chili Pepper family.  Its shape is like a Banana hence its name.

Okra from the Urban Garden in Downtown Boynton Beach, Florida. Okra is a flowering plant whose name origin "Okra"is from West Africa.  It's native to the tropics of the Eastern Hemisphere.

Tomato at the Urban Garden in Downtown Boynton Beach, Florida. The tomato is a fruit that originated in the Andean area of South America in Peru and Ecuador.  The tomato was introduced in the early 16th century to Europe by the Spanish.  The Italians and Spanish were among the first to use the tomato as food.  Europeans brought Tomatos to Europe. USA President Thomas Jefferson raised them on his plantation Monticello in year 1781. Then in 1812, the tomato was used as food in Louisiana and spread to northeastern states with use as food in 1835. The Tomato reached widespread popularity in the United States in the early 20th Century.

Effective April 1, 2013, $40 per person is the new rate for the general public tours. Due to the increase in fees that are charged to our organization for the tour bus rental and insurance; an increase in our tour fees is necessary. Pre-paid reservations that have been made prior to that date will not be effected. The Taste History Culinary Tours program is operated by a non-profit 501c3 organization and run by non-paid volunteers.
